Changes, changes, changes
Posted By Ursula on June 26, 2011
Change is difficult. It does not matter if it is good change or bad change. It does not matter if it is change that you want to happen or change that you do not want to happen. The fact of the matter is that change is hard.
I have been talking with a friend about change lately, and we both agree that, on top of being difficult at any time, change becomes even harder as we get older, get comfortable, and get set in our ways. (more…)

June is black music month, or African-American Music Appreciation month as President Obama has referred to it. Despite that, in Detroit, one of the cities in the country with one of the richest music histories, there does not seem to be much going on to celebrate.
Nevertheless, Atlantic Records wants to help you celebrate black music month with the site iheartblackmusic.com. The site has a black music fact of the day, music conversations, and videos of current artists performing and discussing music. While this is black music month, the plan of the site is to celebrate black music for an entire year. Some of the artists already featured on the site include Janelle Monáe, B.o.B., Lupe Fiasco, and Estelle.
The site seems to be in its early stages at the moment, but it is off to a good start. Check it out frequently for updates.
Universal Studios, Day 2
Posted By Ursula on April 17, 2011
I had hoped to go to church today, but my friend had other things to do. Thus, I was stuck at Universal Studios Hollywood for another day. So, I had a pretty bad customer service experience at the park today, which I will not get into at all. All I have to say is that they do not have to worry about me coming to Universal Studios Hollywood again. (more…)
Chasing Janet Jackson
Posted By Ursula on April 16, 2011
One of the reasons that I decided to go to California for my birthday was because Janet Jackson was going to be there during that time. After everything that happened with Michael Jackson, I figured that it would be a good idea to see her once in my life while I still had the chance. I actually almost saw her in Chicago because it was the closest venue to me. This was all well before she announced a Detroit stop, of course. I opted to just see her in California. Why pay for two trips instead of one?
I was a reluctant fan of Janet Jackson. Actually, I could not stand her in the beginning. I started to warm up to her a little after Rhythm Nation. Instead of ever buying that, though, I just bought Design of a Decade. It was not until someone let me borrow a copy of janet. that I became somewhat of a fan. I now own copies of those two records, The Velvet Rope, All For You, Damita Jo, and I own songs off of both 20 Y.O. and Discipline. I guess, at this point, I can appreciate her for who she is at least. (more…)
B-day Trip Part II, Universal Studios
Posted By Ursula on April 16, 2011
Today is my actual birthday. Happy Birthday to me! Today, my trip direction also changed. My friend dropped me off at the Hilton Universal City before going off to a wedding. I chose this hotel because it was one of the two closest to the Universal Studios Hollywood. I was able to check in early and eat something before going off to the park. The room was not nearly as impressive as the Disneyland Hotel, but it was decent enough. (more…)
Disneyland 2011, Part Two
Posted By Ursula on April 15, 2011
Originally, I was supposed to spend most of this day with my friend who picked me up from the airport. However, our plans were thwarted because of the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. As a result, I ended up staying at Disneyland for most of the day instead of just the morning. (more…)
Welcome “Home,” Ursula
Posted By Ursula on April 14, 2011
That is how I feel at Disneyland…right at home. While I was living close by, I made many trips to Disneyland. I even had an annual pass at least one of the years that I lived in California. Having been away so long, I truly missed it. Being at the park again, though, was like riding a bike after not riding a bike for a little while. It all comes back to you. After only a few minutes, I regained my orientation and remembered where everything was, what places to hit first, and the like. (more…)
No More Bad Birthdays
Posted By Ursula on April 14, 2011
I had a terrible birthday last year. It was by far the worst birthday of my life. I was literally in tears my birthday last year. I do not want to get into it, but the point of the story is that it was a bad birthday.
As a result of last year’s birthday experience, I vowed that I would never have another birthday like that again. Thus, this year I decided to do things with a bang and take a trip.
I planned a trip to the LA area. I intended on visiting Disneyland, visiting Universal Studios Hollywood, and seeing Janet Jackson in concert. (more…)
Dominoes, Al Green, and Aunt Rett
Posted By Ursula on March 23, 2011
As I mentioned in an earlier post, my dad’s oldest sister passed away recently. Today was the funeral. I do not go to funerals. That is a conversation in and of itself, so I will not get into for now. However, I decided to go to this one, my first in years, to support my dad.
When I think about my Aunt Rett, a couple of things come to mind. She loved dominoes. If you ask anyone about her, they will probably tell you that at some point in the conversation. She also enjoyed bowling and music. I remember when my Aunt Elaine bought her a tape player and she wore it around the house playing her tunes all day. There is one memory that always comes to mind for me, though when I think of Aunt Rett. (more…)
In a world of Facebook
Posted By Ursula on March 17, 2011
In a world of Facebook, you can learn about a plethora of things instantly. Nevertheless, some things do not seem to be appropriate status posts. I never wanted to learn about the death of my Aunt in such a way, but that is how I did learn about it. Her grandkids had posted something about it on Facebook before my parents got the chance to tell me. (more…)
The Power of the Dream
Posted By Ursula on January 31, 2011
Yesterday, we at Wyoming Avenue Church of Christ were blessed to hear a sermon from Terrance McClain entitled The Power of the Dream. The gist of the sermon seemed to be that if you can still breathe, then you are alive, and there still something for you to do. He talked about people who had dreams, and he talked about how acting on those dreams changed the world.
After listening to this sermon, I thought about my own dreams and goals and one question came to mind: When did I stop dreaming? (more…)
NAIAS 2011

Today I went to the North American International Auto Show 2011. I missed the show last year, and I apparently missed a year of happenings in cars. Walking around the showroom floor, I had no idea that some cars were missing because they were being discontinued and replaced by totally new cars. Nor did I know that some other cars had been revived. This happens all the time, but I was totally clueless about some specific cars despite my family working for the related company and even making some of the new cars. I guess that I cannot know everything about the automobile market.

The Five Love Languages
Posted By Ursula on January 20, 2011
Years ago when I was taking a marriage class, we studied the book The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman. I thought that the book made some good points, and I also believed that it could be beneficial to not only people in marital or romantic relationships, but to everyone.
According to the book, The Five Love Languages there are five love languages: words of affirmation, quality time, receiving gifts, acts of service, and physical touch. You can read more about them on the the companion web site here.
While all of the languages are important to me to some degree, some are more important, as is the case for most people. While reading, I pinpointed what I thought was my primary love language, but I had never taken the test to see whether it confirmed my thoughts.

More Welcome Than Intended
Posted By Ursula on January 19, 2011
Today, while I was at home brushing my teeth, I heard a noise outside my door. I could not figure out for the life of me what it was, so I went to look. Why did I see a woman standing outside my door moving around? I stepped back a second while I contemplated opening the door and asking her if she needed help. Then, I heard the noise again and decided to look out once more. I then figured out that this lady was simply using my welcome mat to wipe her feet! Uh, that is a little more welcome than I intended for strangers to be outside my door. LOL
