A Betta has friends…maybe for real this time
So, I really started to get concerned about my betta being in the tank with the two tiger barbs, one of which just kept chasing around the other and picking at the the betta. I broke down and bought three more tiger barbs in hopes that they would all calm down.
The first night, the crazy tiger barb that was already there just terrorized the other tiger barbs, while the tiny one that was used to getting chased finally got some relief and kept to itself. This puzzled me because the new tiger barbs were quite a bit larger than the first two, yet they were running away like little punks. I eventually got frustrated with the bully fish and tried for an hour or so to get it out of the tank with no luck. I just gave up and went to bed.
It took a few days for the tiger barbs to get calm, get used to each other, and start “schooling,” but they still have their crazy moments. It seems that the tiger barbs know whose tank it is, though. When the tiger barbs are acting up, the betta often intervenes and stops them. The tiger barbs run away and generally go in the other direction of the betta as it swims around the tank. Hopefully no fish kills or hurts another and we will all be fine. Sigh.
