Detroit Jazz Festival 2010
I had not been to any festivals downtown Detroit at all this year. I wanted to go, but I just never got around to making any of them. I did not want to miss the Detroit Jazz Fest, though, especially since Branford Marsalis was going to be there. I try to catch him whenever he is in town. This would have been my fourth time seeing him.
After going to Arts, Beats, & Eats this past weekend, attending the Detroit Jazz Fest was a very pleasant alternative. First of all, this festival is free.
Secondly, despite its entrance being free, big names in jazz always show up at this festival. This year along with Branford Marsalis, we had Ledisi, Terence Blanchard, Mulgrew Miller, Take 6, and Manhattan Transfer, just to name a few.
Additionally, parking was easy to find and affordable. The stages were spaced far enough apart that there was a lot less congestion than there was at Arts, Beats, & Eats. Of course there were huge groups around the stage areas, but it was even possible to move through these crowds.
I purposely picked today to attend so that I could see Branford Marsalis. We arrived after his set had already started, though, so there was no getting close to the stage. The beautiful thing about live music, especially jazz, is that you can still enjoy it as long as you can still hear it. Hearing it was no problem at all. Plus, they had a big screen for latecomers like me. This was as close as I could get, but it is a tiny taste of what it is all about:
