Driving Chronicles #8: Parallel Parking

Today was my second lesson from Sears Driving School. This time, it was all driving on major streets. I tried to psych myself up before I went this time, and it may have worked. I felt a lot more comfortable driving today than I did yesterday.

Aside from regular street and freeway driving, the instructor took me through the first part of the skills test. In this part, you pull up to a line and stop behind it but not too far away. Then, you back into a space. You then pull out to the right from that space, stop, and parallel park in another space. We went through this several times. Apparently I got it, but, just as I feel when we are doing all the other driving, I am just doing what the instructor says. They tell you exactly what to do. So, I feel like I am not really learning in a way, but instead I am kind of just doing what the instructor tells me to do. I am just following directions. The only problem is that at the test, and in the future, there will not be anyone telling me what to do when I drive.

At any rate, the instructor said he thought that in a few more hours of practice that I would be ready for the test. He said that the average person need 30 hrs of practice to prepare, but he thought that I would be good with six at the most. I guess that is comforting. It has always been that I just need practice. I do not know how many more of these lessons I can afford, though.
