Goals: New, Good Habit Made…
Twenty-one days ago, I finally picked a goal on which I wanted to work and wanted to try to make into a daily habit. I put the good habit bookmarks into practice and made a habit of something that I have been trying to make a daily habit of for years—studying the bible. I did not want to merely read the bible daily, as I am pretty good about that, but I wanted to have an in depth study of at least a short passage daily using the inductive bible study method. Still, on the bookmark I wrote study/read the bible as the goal, so either would have been acceptable to get me started.
Surprisingly enough, the good habit bookmark worked. I think that it worked because I had something to check off everyday. After about a week, I got so used to studying my bible daily that if I had not done it by 10:00pm, some internal, personal clock reminded me. Then, I would study right then. I also actually studied the bible for the whole twenty-one days, as opposed to just reading it.
Now the hard part is keeping this habit, as this is something that I would want to continue for the rest of my life.
So, since the good habit bookmark for this task was done, I made another tracker to help me stay on my toes. I printed out a huge picture of a bible with the words “Have you studied your bible today” above it. I then wrote the word “yes” in the bottom left corner with a sharpie and the word “no” on the bottom right corner. I then pulled off a regular post it note and covered “yes.” I posted the sign above my second desk (where I usually do the studying), and I just move this post it note back and forth everyday. Hopefully, this will help me to stay on track, although, the enhancement the whole process has added to my life should be enough. I always felt better after studying. If only I could get it done in the morning, as opposed to mostly evenings, then it might even make each day a lot better.
