Happy MLK day ’09
It irritates me how hardly any place of business recognizes today as a holiday. I have heard stories of people who had to bargain at their jobs to get the day off. One such story involved the employees giving up Columbus Day to have MLK Day off.
My job is one of those places where we still work on MLK Day. It is one of several holidays that we do not get off. Others include Columbus Day, Veteran’s Day, and Washington’s Birthday/President’s day. To make matters worse, while I do not work every day, I always work on Monday. So, I end up working all of these holidays. I think that the thinking of my job is that everyone else will be off these days, so we will get more business.
Suffice it to say, I cannot even engage in a day of service myself because I have to go to work. What I wonder, though, is how many of those who are off actually participate in a day of service anyway. I mean, how many people sit at home in front of the TV, sleep in, or otherwise do nothing on MLK Day.
As for me, this year, all that I am left to do is listen to the two songs that I have that have any relation to MLK and then go to work. I do not even own a copy of Stevie Wonder‘s infamous “Happy Birthday,” which, in my opinion, is not all that easy on the ears. Nevertheless, I applaud the song and it’s message, as well as the song‘s instrumental role in getting MLK Day made into an holiday.
So, here are the songs that I do have:
“I had a Dream” by The Boys (as in Messages From the Boys) Now the Suns of Light and featuring D-Nice

“Symphony of Brotherhood” by Miri Ben-Ari featuring Martin Luther King, Jr.
And now, I work…
