How many jobs can one girl have?
I recently got back in touch with a friend from college that I had not spoken with in several years (Ah, the wonders of Facebook). My friend and I chatted a little bit to catch up on each others lives, and upon hearing about my work situation, he asked, “How can you have so many jobs?”
I thought about that, and, honestly, I still do not have an answer. I guess my reply would be that I do not have enough jobs because this week, I am supposed to start job number four.
A few months ago, I registered with oDesk to see if there were any decent freelance work options for me so that I could make a few extra bucks and use some of the skills that I do not really use on my current jobs.
So I beefed up my oDesk profile, and applied to a job or two. Well, soon after applying, I was offered a position helping a gentleman with some of his web sites, and I am supposed to start doing that this week.
So, as a result of the fact that I am about to start job number four, and the question from my friend, I have been thinking about where I want to go with my job life. It is not like I need the extra money. I think that more so, I want the experience, or at least to just be paid to do something that I enjoy more than some of my other jobs. I think that I am trying to find my niche. I guess I just want to find aposition that I enjoy and that will pay me enough to live, so that I can live a happier life in general.
I already know that the majority of people do not enjoy their jobs, and I realize that it is possible that I may never find my ideal job. That does not mean that I will stop looking and trying, though. Ever since I left Apple, I have always thought about what things actually would make up an ideal job for me. Here is my list as far as I can think for now.
At my ideal job…
- I work from home.
- I can make my own schedule and I do not work weekends or evenings. I may not even work 40hrs a week, but I still get paid like I do.
- I can wear jeans every day.
- If I have to use a computer, then it is a Mac.
- I work with things (words, numbers, music, data) as opposed to people (with whom I work exceptionally well , but with whom I would just rather not work).
- I get paid enough to cover all of my bills, put a substanstial amount in savings, and have a decent amount of fun money left over.
I also think that I would like to work with other African Americans, but I am not sure sinceI have mostly been the token and do not really know how the experience would be. However, if I did work with other African Americans, I would want to work with educated black folk like me and not ghetto black folk (not even the educated ones).
I look at this list and think that the one job that I had that came the closest was the Apple job. When I left, I was so ready to leave, but as I think back, I realize that I did not mind the actual work that I did. I may have actually even enjoyed it to an extent. It was the fact that other’s actions could easily mess up my work, along with a bunch of other personal reasons, that made me leave.
Hmm. Well, now that my oDesk profile is out there. Hit me up if you know something cool that needs my skills
