I Got a New Way to Walk
This month, I made of habit of something that I did not even know was going to be a goal for me. Let’s face it. I am getting older and my body is changing. I keep counting little gray hairs, and, while I have not gained any weight, I have seen a shifting of the little weight that I do have on my body. I figured that it would just get worse as I get older, and eventually I would start to pick up weight if I do not do something now. Thus, I started to think that I should start a regular workout routine.
I have worked out inconsistently over the years. I have never had a regular routine. In more recent years, I have wanted to get an elliptical machine and use it at least three times a week, but it is just not in the budget. I am then left to work with what I have at home, which is a few exercise videos and no exercise equipment.
A couple of years ago, I started walking every once in a while, but it was not consistent either. So, in a now or never approach, I got it in my head that I could easily walk around my home, or even in my home Leslie Sansone style if necessary. Still, I was not any more motivated than usual. It was hard even to take that first walk, despite the fact that I did not want to do anything intense. I just wanted to take a vigorous one mile walk every day. Even walking fifteen minutes a day has got to be better than doing nothing at all.
It took me about two weeks of telling myself that I needed to do this before I actually took my first walk. Since then, though I have committed to making it a habit with the use of the good habit bookmarks again. I started at the end of January, and I managed to have not missed a day since. Officially it is now a habit, and I made it a habit on the first try. I walk at least one mile a day, and, on most days, I usually walk a bit more that that. Like I said, it is not much, but it is better than nothing. I was concerned that it would be a challenge for me to keep up with it on the weekends, but I have stayed on track. The nice thing about walking is that I can do something else while doing it. I can read, make some phone calls, watch a movie, and countless other things. Hopefully, this will make it easier to get into a real workout routine in the future. For now, at least it is something. Like these folk, “I got a new way to walk”
