Labor Day ’08…Obama in Detroit

For many, Labor Day is just another day off from work. In a town like Detroit and a state like Michigan, though, I would like to think that more people than not remember the true reason for Labor DayLabor Day was started as a celebration of the labor movement and labor unions. Nicole and Mike March

Having been raised in a family where labor unions, particularly the UAW have had a huge effect on our life and well-being, I decided to show my support and dedication by marching with my sister and father. Besides, Obama was going to be there and I figured that I might be able to get a glance and see what he had to say.

We did not arrive until around 9:30am and the parade had already started. Oddly enough, though, the unions were at the end of the parade, so they were still waiting. We had to walk around for a while before we found my sister’s union. Go local 5960! My father kept trying to find his other union. I guess he walked with them because he did not walk with us. This picture is my sister and her friend from the plant.

It was about 11 when we finally made it down to Hart Plaza, which was packed. There was no chance of getting anywhere near Obama, so we just walked back to our cars and went home to watch it on TV.

Obama was only up for 10 or 11 minutes. He did not really talk about much as far as the issues go. Aside from the brief comment on Bush’s labor policies, the short message went to uniting together to support and aid victims of Hurricane Gustav. Pretty underwhelming, but pretty appropriate I guess.
