Precious moments in the life of Urs…

Me, Shayna, Jazmine, and Robin at Chene Park

To help celebrate my friend Shayna’s birthday, I bought tickets to go see Robin Thicke at Chene Park in Detroit. This was my second time seeing Robin Thicke. The first time I saw him was when he opened for John Legend at the State Theater a couple of years ago. That concert also featured Consequence, who I think is highly underrated, but I guess that is another story for another day.
This time, Jazmine Sullivan was with Robin Thicke. I wish I could have seen much more of Jazmine Sullivan. From what I heard other people saying, she performed most of her album. We got there too late to hear most of it, though. When walking up to the park, we were able to hear her singing “After the Hurricane.” When we were walking in and when we were in the bathroom, Jazmine was singing the amusing and oh so catchy “Switch!

When we finally came out and sat down, Jazmine was singing the heartfelt ballad “In Love with Another Man.” Then Jazmine closed with “Need U Bad,” of course.

From what I heard, Jazmine definitely knows how to handle herself live. You know there are people who just cannot sing live, and Jazmine Sullivan is clearly not one of those people. Here is a clip of her singing “Need U Bad.” It is not the greatest quality, but you get the idea:

I really hope that people do not let “Bust Your Windows” foster their perception of Jazmine Sullivan. It seems like some people wrote her off with that song, at least initially. I enjoy the song itself, but there are many other, more profound, well written, and incredibly sung songs on the album. I hope Jazmine Sullivan catches on to more people.

After Jazmine Sullivan left, there was a set change and then on came Robin Thicke. Robin opened with “Magic” and then continued to wow from there. Robin holds his own in concert. He is a real crowd pleaser. However, I think that he was a little less animated this time than when I saw him at the State. Still, he kept the crowd engaged and put on a great show.

In addition to “Magic,” Robin’s set list included, in no particular order (because I cannot remember the order), “You’re My Baby,” “Can U Believe,” “Complicated,” “Lost Without U,” “All Night Long,” “Everything I Can’t Have,” “Teach U a Lesson,” “I Need Love,” “Wanna Love You Girl,” “Shooter,” “Angels,” “Sidestep,” “Dreamworld,” and “The Sweetest Love.” I would have like to hear “When I Get You Alone,” too, but, with all of the other songs that he performed, I guess that I cannot complain.

There may have been a couple of others that he sang, but the real treat, and the big difference between this and the first concert where I saw Robin, was the covers that he performed. Somewhere in the middle of the set, the band got a break and Robin performed Jodeci‘s “Come and Talk to Me” and Michael Jackson‘s “Human Nature.” Both were mostly a capella, so it was really good to be able to hear Robin’s voice. He also sang Debarge‘s “All This Love” with music.

Now, I will never understand why people do not know by now that if the house lights are not on, then the concert is not over. Get a clue people. When Robin left the stage near the end, I could not believe that people started piling out like crazy. I was busy trying to make noise so that Robin would come back out, while being afraid that he would not because almost all of the other people there were obviously dimwitted.

Nevertheless, it turned out to be a better situation for me because, when Robin came back out and performed Al Green‘s “Let’s Stay Together,” and Michael Jackson‘s “Rock With You,” we were able to move up and get a closer look.

Here are the other clips and pictures that I got from the show. Enjoy!
