Motown is 50!
I am ashamed to say that in all my 32 years on this earth, today was the first time that I had ever been to the Motown Historical Museum. I went with my mother and younger sister. You know how it is. People never play tourist in their own town…I was actually supposed to go earlier last year when a friend of mine came to town to visit, but he actually stole my parents, and they all went without me.
Either way, it is better late than never. In all actuality, there was probably no better time to get around to going than this year, since this year is the 50th anniversary. Fifty years ago yesterday, Berry Gordy secured the funds to start Motown Records. So, there are special events all week, and admission was even half off!
I had a great time and learned so much. We got to hear from the likes of Maxine Powell, who ran the finishing school at Motown, Rosalind Ashford-Holmes, and Annette Beard-Helton of the Original Vandellas, Arranger Paul Riser, Writer Ivy Hunter, Dennis Coffey of the Funk Brothers, Singer Frances Nero, Writer Melvin Moy, and Jackie Hicks of the Andantes (Motown backup singers).
I really enjoyed hearing from all of them and seeing all of the sights, especially MJ‘s fedora and glove that he wore at the Motown 25, but by far, the most enjoyable thing on this tour was Maxine Powell. She is so inspiring and just leaves you feeling really good. She talked about how she worked to refine all of the artists. She even mentioned how she had to tone down Diana Ross‘ snooty attitude somewhat. More importantly, though, In the few minutes that you stand and listen to her, Maxine Powell makes sure to instill some of her knowledge in you and help you remember that you are somebody special, too. That was just amazing. It is worth the trip not only to see the history but to really listen to Maxine Powell and take to heart what she says.
I am glad that I finally got to go and at such a great time to go. I definitely recommend it to anyone that ever comes to town, and I plan to go back again myself.
