The Sad State of Healthcare

While the Obama administration twiddles its thumbs, trying to figure out what to do about healthcare, some citizens are taking matters into their own hands.

Having lived without healthcare for a considerable portion of my adult life, the thought has crossed my mind, although very briefly, more than once in my life, but I know that I would never go through with  it. Bill Claude, on the other hand, did go through with it.

Considering his situation, one can see why he went to such extremes. Claude’s wife suffers from ovarian cancer. He lost his job, and the cost of health care was only going to get steeper and steeper. His solution: join the Army. Read Bill’s story here.

Like I said, the thought has briefly crossed my mind at different points in my adult life, and not just because of health care. There is also the assurance of a steady job, meals, and shelter right along with that health care. I guess prison offers all of those things to some degree, but you have to do something illegal to get there. Nevertheless, neither the armed forces, nor prison is for me.

The simple fact that we live in a society where people feel the need to go to such extremes, though, is saddening and somewhat frightening. If this is not a sign that something, and something quick, and drastic needs to be done about the state of healthcare in this country, then I do not know what is.
