Where no man has gone before…
This was my sister’s facebook post from around 7:00pm-11:00pm. I think that I have had the title of “geek” for quite some time now, so the night was nothing unusual for me. LOL
We spent the evening enjoying the DSO play selections from Star Trek, Star Wars, and selected pieces from John Williams.
They had something similar to this last year, but, when I was ready to buy tickets for it, they were actually sold out. Now with the release of the new Star Trek movie and Star Trek: The Exhibition at the Science Center, I guess they decided to do it again.
I really enjoyed myself from start to finish. When we walked into the music complex, they had classic Star Trek playing on a flat screen monitor and posters along the walls.
It was a full crowd, which pleases and saddens me at the same time. There is rarely a full crowd for traditional orchestra events that I attend. This was the second showing of four, though. If this Thursday crowd was any indication of the crowds they would get for the remaining shows, then it is very good.
I was much impressed, though with the children sitting behind me. They could not have been older than seven years of age, if that old. When the adults that were with them started naming the songs that would be played from the program, the children would say “I know how that goes!” and start humming the song. They also tried to hum along with some of the songs during the concert. That was comendable (and cute), especially with the suffering state of fine arts programs in this area. Of couse it could just mean that these children watch the associated movies too much. LOL
The performance was complete with lighting and sound effects. The conductor also tried to give background information before most of the pieces. While Star Wars was treated as the main event, I was really there for the Star Trek. It was still great overall. We were even able to enjoy a nice surprise ending with The Cantina Band song as an encore piece!
At the end of the performance there was a storm trooper at the bottom of the stairs and other major characters positioned for pictures. All in all, it was a fun night. If my participation leads me to be classified as a “geek,” well, then so be it (or maybe I should say “make it so”). LOL
