Why I love Raven (Raven comes to Michigan State Fair ’08)
As old as I am, I love Raven-Symoné. I do not watch TV, but I have recorded and ripped, or bought off iTunes, every single episode of “That’s So Raven,” and I carry them around on my iPod. I own a copy of both “This Is My Time,” “Raven-Symoné,” several songs off “That’s So Raven” and “That’s So Raven Too!,” and other miscellaneous songs. I try to see all of Raven-Symoné‘s movies, even if she only has a small part. I love Raven-Symoné.
In a time where morals are almost nonexistent and childhood stars are falling left and right, Raven-Symoné has managed to stay up. I love Raven-Symoné because she is a beautiful woman inside out, and she is a positive role model for young girls and women, as well as older women.

Every time you see her, she is positive. You never hear about her getting into trouble. Raven-Symoné even stayed calm and maintained her morals and dignity when Punk’d, while others in the same situation start cursing and fussing. Ebony Magazine did a great article on Raven-Symoné that sheds some light on why she has such good charachter. I respect that.
So, when I heard Raven-Symoné was coming to the Michigan State Fair in Detroit again, I decided that I wanted to support her. I convinced my mother to take me and attend with me, and we set out to the fair. I even paid the extra money to sit inside the “VIP” box, so I could be a little closer and really give my support. We got there too late to sit really close to the front. We were in row 25 of 30, but, still, being in the box allowed us the opportunity to walk up towards the stage. Since I am at least three times older than the average person that was in the audience, there should not have been too much trouble seeing over people’s heads. The only problem is that Raven-Symoné is pretty short, apparently, even when wearing hills. Between me and my mother, we still actually made out with some decent pictures. I made a slide show of the best ones.
The show was supposed to start at 7:00, but at that time, some people from Radio Disney came out and tried to hype up the crowd a bit. They came back periodically between acts, too. Next, a dance group from Rochester Hills, I think, got on stage and started dancing. I tried to be as supportive as possible to these talented kids from Michigan, but they must have done about 15 different routines for forty minutes. It started to get tired after a while. After that, they brought on a “Molly Somebody” who had won some contest. She really had a nice voice, especially for her age, but she picked the most boring song to sing. The little girls were not feeling it, and neither was I.
Then, they let Justin Stein perform a few songs. He had performed the night before, opening for Corbin Bleu, and I guess he was such a hit that they asked him back. He was actually pretty decent. He was a good performer and had a decent voice. He was like a little Robin Thicke in training. It was so funny how everyone was just sitting there while he sang the first couple of songs because no one knew who he was. Even so, when he came out into the audience and walked all the way around the perimeter of the “VIP” section, the little girls went wild. Too funny. After that, people were more into him.
After that was about the time that the Disney Radio people came out and led everybody in the “Cha Cha Slide.” Raven-Symoné finally came on after that. Raven-Symoné put on a good show. She danced a lot, talked to the audience some, answered some questions, and sang a lot of songs. The set list included Superstition, Some Call It Magic, Grazing In the Grass, Anti-Love Song, That Girl, Girl Get It, In the Pictures, Typical, This Is My Time, and of course Double Dutch Bus, as well as some others.
Along with the pictures below from the show, I was also able to get some fair-quality video (seen below) of the performance from my still camera. You can see two clips from my current favorite Raven-Symoné song “Anti-Love Song“ and one clip of “Girl Get It.” The “Anti-Love Song” clips have better sound and relatively poor video, while the “Girl Get It” clip has pretty nice quality video and relatively poor sound.
I do not think Raven-Symoné gets the props that she deserves because her voice is deeper and more robust than the other teenie-bopper, pop princesses that you hear these days. But the girl can really sing. I cannot wait to see what is next, now that she has parted ways with Hollywood Records.
