Wicked
Yesterday, my sister and I went to see Wicked. We had purchased the tickets months ago, and it was a good thing. It gave me something to do this week.
Once we got there, I have to say, I got sick.
I was sitting on the end, though and was able to stretch out and kind of lay out to help me get through the whole thing.
It was quite entertaining. If you are not aware, Wicked tells the story of the Witches of Oz. The musical portrays the wicked witch of west as a generally good person and former friend of glenda the good witch. From what I have read and learned from others, the actual book on which the musical is based is somewhat different and darker.
Someone actually gave me the book a few years ago, shortly before it became a musical. I never read it though because, quite frankly, the person who gave it to me frightened me when she started talking about how she herself was a misunderstood witch. Huhn?
Anyway, it is a very interesting story although it will make you feel differently about “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.” Having enjoyed the latter over the years and given it a place in my heart, I found some elements of the musical frustrating. I have no problem believing that maybe the wicked witch of the west was just misunderstood, but the origins of the cowardly lion, tin man, and scarecrow according to this story were a bit much for me. Still, I enjoyed the musical.
The one thing that it left me thinking, though, was how seemingly a few people are now banking heavily on characters created by someone else and probably without their (or their estates) permission. That scares me. I would hate to create something and then someone reinterpret it and the reinterpretation become even bigger than my original creation. Hmm.
